about

“So Approximate” is written by Khallee. Production by Ex-Official. Mixing and mastering by Martin Merenyi. All revenue from this and all other Ex-Official releases will be donated to Equality for Flatbush.

“So Approximate” is the potent and timely result of a smoky pre-pandemic recording session. The track finds Khallee’s surefooted flow gliding nimbly over a syrupy bassline and supercharged drum kit to deliver ruminations on problematic continuums of history and hierarchy. “Kids don't respect the love, then respect the judge, it's no grudge again” he raps, lacing flickers of falsetto and echoing ad libs into the mix as the track moves through a cascade of hooks.

Inspired in part by the artist’s conversation with a cab driver on his way to the studio, “So Approximate” sees Khallee responding to the world in real time, exploring the power dynamics of generational toxicity, inherited racism, and hierarchical worldviews that get passed down time and again. “Everything it trickles from the top and gotta go south/ folks rocking old flags like they got some know-how,” he sings, delving into the dangerous perspectives of the past at risk of recycling themselves over and over into the future. Laid to tape well before the turbulence of Summer 2020, the song nonetheless feels particularly prescient, recognizing the conditions and contexts that prevent us all from moving forward together.
